御木坊木饰家，始于明熹宗天启元年(1621年)。顺天府通州市京杭大运河的源头，通州设皇木商家，从南方一路水运而来的顶级木料，经过皇木商家筛选，开料、烘干等工序后入库备用，专为存储用于建造皇宫和制作皇室家具的木料，皇木商家周边因此衍生里诸多负责木器制作和加工的大大小小的工坊。
明熹宗朱由校自幼喜欢木器制作，常做出玲珑精巧的器械，令观者赞叹。一天，朱由校陪同父亲私访至皇木商家挑选木料，被一家工坊马姓老师傅的娴熟技艺所吸引：那些质地坚硬的硬木在师傅的手上变成了精巧的榫卯，它们凹凸错落，亲密无间，工艺精确至极。马老师傅见其虽像富家子弟，却对家具制作有着难得的细心和好奇，便耐心的指导他一些木工技法。此后，朱由校常借各种机会来作坊求教，马氏被其虚心好学的热情所感动，决定收其为徒，毫无保留的教他更为奥妙复杂的工术。长此以往，约3年时间，朱由校的制作技术的得到提升。至此作品之高深，令人震惊。师傅虽不知其为皇孙，但一直教诲不倦，也给朱由校留下终身铭记于心的恩情记忆。
1620年9月1日先皇驾崩，9月6日刚满15岁的朱由校正式登基帝位，下诏改年号天启，是为明熹宗。登帝后，朱由校仍旧时常醉心于木工，每每于此怀念恩师。一年后，顺天府通州木匠马氏被应诏入京，于周年大典之上，其家传木具作坊被熹宗册封为“御木坊木饰”，并由熹宗亲自提名赐匾。“御木坊木饰”从此一发不可收，成为皇家的御用木具工坊，此后的历代帝王，都视御木坊为皇室必选木具提供者。在之后的近300多年里，御木坊是当之无愧的国家级瑰宝。“御木坊木饰”之于明清家具步入鼎盛和手工制作业的发展成熟，都有着巨大的难以替代的作用。
